Event Description:
Land of La Chua ... looks at our town through the ages. Starting with native people, Land of La Chua travels through time, celebrating 150 years of our history. The focus is the people, nature and culture of our amazing town from the beginning to current time. Dance Alive National Ballet choreographers Kim Tuttle and Judy Skinner bring together the amazing talents of DANB dancers and the resources of our extraordinary community to create a walk through time.
Artist Margaret Tolbert and composer Stella Sung explore the beauty and magic of our springs while poet Lola Haskins, along with images from the Matheson History Museum take us to another time and place in and around Paynes Prairie. Interwoven are the stories, poems and songs of Florida's 'Black Hat Troubadour' Will McLean. Special guests include UF's School of Music Dr. Anthony Offerle backed by images of early UF leading the alma mater, Dr. Elizabeth Graham singing 'Amazing Grace' while we are transfixed by a list of Gainesville veterans who fought in campaigns from the Spanish American War through Vietnam. Weaver Gaines will speak of his ancestor General Edmund P Gaines who fought in the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars and the Mexican-American War. Videography by Houston Wells and images by David Johnston provide the visual background for this amazing project.
A talk-back with artists and contributors will follow the performance while displays, memorabilia, music, film, a time-line provided by the Matheson History Museum and experts in a variety of subjects key our history will be made available for audience members in both Fackler Foyers at the Phillips Center. In the upper lobby … a huge birthday cake!
Contributors to this project include: The City of Gainesville, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, Evergreen Cemetery, The Matheson History Museum, The Will McLean Foundation, Alachua County, Visit Gainesville, Gainesville Veteran’s Center, American Legion Post 16, SkyLabs and individuals Russell Etling, Lars Anderson, Peggy McDonald, Chris Takashima, Bob Robins, Ani Collier and Donna Green-Townsend.
